"For the word of God is living and active....."Hebrews 4:12 It never ceases to amaze me what I walk away with sometimes when I study God's word. In addition to several other things, my main study right now is in the book of Romans. However, this morning my study in Romans landed me in Daniel 9 so I thought I would take a moment and read the whole chapter to get the context. Funny, but this is what stood out to me. Verse 18, "Oh my God, incline Thine ear and hear! Open Thine eyes and see our desolations and the city which is called by Thy name; for we are not presenting our supplications before Thee on account of any merits (our righteousness) of our own, but on account of Thy great compassion." It just made me think about "why we pray". As I study scripture, one of the things I ALWAYS look for is what I learn about God. Who He is, how He acts, what He does etc. Of course, I ran and got my dictionary to look up the word "compassion". Keep in mind Noah Webster was a christian and the dictionary is written by men, but this is what it said. "Compassion is sympathetic consciousness of others distress together with a desire to alleviate it." I was glad to be reminded of that!
